Building Well-Rounded Athletes: Inside Our Plantation Swim Team Partnership
Swimmers are some of the most disciplined athletes on the planet. Six mornings a week in the pool, thousands of yards before school, a training calendar built around meets most people have never heard of. But no matter how many laps you swim, the water can only build so much of an athlete. The rest — the strength, the durability, the explosive power off the wall — has to be built on land.
That's where our partnership with the Plantation Swim Team comes in. For the past few seasons, OutFit Training has run dryland strength and conditioning for their athletes, right here in Plantation, FL. This is a look inside what that partnership looks like, why it works, and how we approach youth athletic training in general.
Why Dryland Training Matters for Young Swimmers
Competitive swimming is one of the most demanding youth sports there is — and one of the most repetitive. Thousands of the same stroke, thousands of the same kick, thousands of pulls with the same shoulder pattern. Without dryland strength work, that repetition slowly turns into overuse injuries: cranky shoulders, tight hips, a low back that never quite loosens up.
Good dryland training solves the imbalances swimming creates. It builds posterior-chain strength, core stability, single-leg power, and shoulder durability using bodyweight and suspension systems — no crushing barbells, no gym-rat volume, no exercises that fight what the pool is already doing. Done right, it makes swimmers faster off the wall, stronger through the finish, and more resilient across a long season.
It also builds the other thing every young athlete needs: confidence in their own body outside of their sport. A swimmer who can move, jump, brace, and rotate is a better athlete — and a better teammate — for the rest of their life.
1. TRX-Based Strength (the SEAL system) — Foundation
The entire session is anchored in TRX suspension training — the same system a Navy SEAL invented to build durable, mobile, powerful athletes anywhere. TRX scales to every age and body, uses the athlete's own bodyweight, and trains movement patterns (pull, push, hinge, squat, rotate) instead of isolated muscles. It's why the same system that works for pro athletes works for a 12-year-old swimmer.
2. Shoulder Durability & Posture — Swimmer-Specific
Swimming is a rounded-forward sport. Left alone, it creates tight chests, weak mid-backs, and shoulders that eventually break down. We spend real time on rows, external rotation, scapular control, and thoracic mobility so their shoulders stay healthy across a full season — and long after their swim career is over.
3. Core & Rotational Power — Race-Day Speed
A fast stroke starts in the core, not the arms. TRX planks, anti-rotation work, and controlled rotational patterns build the trunk stiffness that transfers force from hip to hand. That's what turns a good pull into a great one — and what keeps the last 25 as strong as the first.
4. Single-Leg Strength & Explosive Starts — Off the Blocks
Races are won at the wall. Split squats, lunges, hinge patterns, and jump progressions build the single-leg strength and explosive hip drive that shows up in starts, turns, and underwaters. It's the fastest area of measurable improvement for most young swimmers.
5. Mobility, Warmup & Recovery — Everyday Habits
We coach the boring stuff too — the two-minute dynamic warmup before practice, the hip and ankle mobility work that keeps kick sharp, the cooldown habits that turn one hard practice into a productive week. Little routines, huge impact over a season.
6. Team Culture & Accountability — The Intangibles
Dryland is also where a team becomes a team. Sessions are loud, high-energy, and social. Athletes push each other, coach each other, and finish workouts fired up instead of dragged out. That energy shows up in the pool on Saturday.
The Same Model Works for Any Young Team
The Plantation Swim Team partnership is one of a handful of youth and high school programs we work with. We also run dryland-style strength and conditioning for Cypress Bay Football, and the same model scales cleanly to soccer clubs, run clubs, volleyball, track, lacrosse, tennis, and school athletic programs across Broward County.
Every group gets programming built around their sport — the movements they need more of, the imbalances their sport creates, and the age of the athletes in front of us. TRX makes it possible to train anyone from a 10-year-old club swimmer to a varsity linebacker with the same system, scaled appropriately.
We come to your practice site, meet you at a Plantation park, or roll up in the OutFit Mobile Studio with everything set up and ready to go. No facility needed, no equipment to buy, no gym membership for the athletes' families. Just great coaching, outside, built for young athletes who deserve better than adult workouts scaled down.
If you coach or organize a youth or high school team in Plantation, Fort Lauderdale, Weston, Sunrise, or anywhere in Broward County — and you want dryland training that actually makes your athletes better — let's talk.
FAQs: Youth Athletic Training & Dryland
- At what age should young athletes start dryland or strength training?
- Earlier than most parents think — as long as it's done right. With bodyweight and TRX-based training, athletes as young as 9 or 10 can safely start building strength, coordination, and body awareness. The key is age-appropriate coaching and movement patterns, not adult workouts scaled down.
- Is TRX suspension training safe for youth athletes?
- Yes. TRX uses the athlete's own bodyweight, so load scales automatically. There are no heavy barbells overhead, no risky spinal loading, and the coach can adjust intensity by simply changing an angle. It's one of the safest and most scalable training tools for young athletes.
- How often should young swimmers or student-athletes cross-train?
- Two dryland or strength sessions per week is the sweet spot for most youth athletes in season, and can bump to three in the offseason. It's enough to drive real improvement in strength, durability, and power without interfering with sport practice or recovery.
- Will strength training make my kid too tired for their sport?
- Not when it's programmed correctly. Our sessions are built to complement practice — not compete with it. Athletes typically finish more energized, not fried, and see recovery improve over the season because they're building the durability their sport needs.
- Do you work with teams besides the Plantation Swim Team?
- Yes. We currently run dryland strength and conditioning for the Plantation Swim Team and Cypress Bay Football, and we work with a range of youth and high school programs across Broward County — soccer clubs, run clubs, track, volleyball, and school athletic programs. The model scales to any sport.
- Where do team sessions take place?
- We come to you. Sessions can run at your practice site, a nearby Plantation park, or wherever your team is already training. We bring the OutFit Mobile Studio with the TRX system and everything else we need — no facility, no equipment purchase required.
- How do we set up team training with OutFit?
- Head to our Training page and fill out the Team & Athletic Training inquiry form, or email hello@outfittrainingftl.com. Tell us your sport, age group, and roughly how many athletes, and we'll put a plan together.
